Class Description
Capoeira is the national treasure of Brazil; a unique Afro-Brazilian martial art, Capoeira is played in a ‘roda,’ or circle, between
two players. The game challenges physical agility and coordination, as well as strategy and interaction. Capoeira combines elements
of combat with play and dance, making it an incredible tool for teaching teamwork, partnership, and respect. Also, in addition to the
benefits of being active, students are developing coordination, social skills, language skills, and cultural awareness. Students of
Capoeira learn the physical art, as well as learn to play music (an essential component of the game) on a variety of instruments used
in the roda, and to sing and speak in Portuguese. All of these skills add to the expressive and creative nature of Capoeira. Traditional
Capoeira songs tell the story of how the game developed in the African slave quarters in Brazil. Rich in history and tradition,
Capoeira engages students on many levels and provides much more than physical exercise.
Music Class -
Music is central to Brazilian culture, and also to Capoeira and Samba. To support both the classes and to provide a taste of this rich
element of Brazil, we provide music classes every week to further develop the skills introduced other programs. Students learn to
sing in Portuguese while practicing Afro-Brazilian percussion and Samba rhythms, as well as traditional Capoeira music which involves
the berimbau, a stringed instrument brought to Brazil by African slaves.
