Spring Camp May 13, 14, 15, 2011

Locations: Brazilian Arts Foundation and Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center

Dance and Capoeira classes with Janete Silva, Liliana Araujo, Professor Alegria (Capoeira Luanda) and Professor Macarrão (Capoeira Luanda).

Instructors Bios:

Janete Silva has studied dance since childhood and has erformed with various local and international companies such as Dance Brazil (NY), Bale Folclórico da Bahia (Brazil), Bahia Brazil (Los Angeles), Orquestra Popular da Bahia (Brasil), Freddiek Bratcher and Company (Miami) to name a few. Her professional training includes Afro-Brazilian Dance, Ballet, Modern Dance and Silvestre Technique. Janete has appeared as a dancer on star singer Ivete Sangalo's recent DVD who will be performing at Madison Square Garden in NYC on September 4th.

Leandro da Silva (Professor Alegria) was born in Salvador, Bahia (Brazil). He currently lives in New York City (NY), where he teaches capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian martial art incorporating dance and acrobatics) and Silva Technique, his own unique blend of afro-brazilian dance, capoeira and contemporary dance. A professionally trained dancer of various styles and capoeirista, Leandro da Silva has toured internationally for several years as a member of the highly acclaimed company Dance Brazil ( 9 years NY/Bahia), Brazarte Dance Company (Miami-FL), Cleo Parker Robinson Dance (Denver-CO), Orquestra Popular da Bahia (Brazil), and Ballethnic Dance Company (Atlanta-GA). He has also participated as director and choreographer of National Black Arts Festival (Atl-GA) and assistant choreographer of Fox's hit series "So You Think You Can Dance" (Canada).

Danilo Portugal known in the Capoeira community as Professor Macarrão, was born and raised in Salvador- Bahia, Brazil and has recently relocated to the Bay Area to share the gifts of Brazilian culture and dance. Before coming here, Professor Macarrão taught at the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre in New York City, traveled the world for 8 years with the performance company DanceBrazil, in which Mestre Jelon Vieira directs, and taught both youth and adults in various communities in the United States and abroad.

Liliana Araujo was born in Ceará, in the northeast of Brazil. She is a singer, dancer and researcher of Brazilian folk dance and music. She has tread upon stages throughout her country in performances of music, theater and dance. A dancer in Grupo Raízes (dança afro), Liliana then joined the Companhia Vatá (Brazilian tap) and Soul Nêgo (performance) in their research of the folkloric traditions of Brazil, focusing primarily on the rich, multi-cultural nordeste. Liliana currently performs as a solo artist and with Forró da Madame and Nation Beat.

Saturday, May 14 at Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center
10 to 11:30am - Frevo with Liliana Araujo
11:30 to 12:45pm - Samba with Janete Silva
1 to 3:30pm - Cooking Class with Tony Parana (Muqueca de Peixe)
4 to 5:30pm - Music Class with Liliana Araujo
6 to 8pm - Capoeira with Professores Alegria and Macarrão

11-12:30 pm - Frevo/Maracatu with Liliana Araujo
12:45-2pm - Orixas with Janete Silva
