Volunteering

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Brazilian Arts Foundation! As a non-profit organization, we rely on our community to help staff our many events and programs.

Volunteer Expectations

1. Dress appropriately for each event- represent yourself and the foundation professionally.

2. Be aware of your language and your behavior- most of our events are family events and we want to be respectful of others in all situations.

3. Approach events with the same responsibility and professionalism as your job- show up on time, be prepared with contact phone numbers and directions, stay until your task is complete.

4. Select events and tasks that suit your personality- ask yourself, do you like to talk to strangers? Meet new people? Work on a team with others? Are you comfortable serving food? Lifting things? Etc.

5. Attend at least one Orientation and Training Session per year. As a Volunteer, you represent the Brazilian Arts Foundation. Be prepared with information, details and the confidence in knowing whom you represent.

6. Attend an event prior to volunteering- get a real feeling for what it is we do.

7. Be realistic about the amount of time you are willing to commit to- if an event is three hours, plan on four, especially when it comes to the Festival.

8. Like us! Already involved? Already a fan? Find us on Facebook (facebook.com/bafhouston) and Great Non-profits (greatnonprofits.org) and show your support by recommending us to your friends or writing a review for potential donors!


We ask all prospective volunteers to attend one 90 minute orientation (offered quarterly) and to attend an event or class related to your area of interest.

Ways to be involved

  • Set up and sell concessions at Movie Night or Samba Nights in the Heights (For details on these events, see the Events page.)
  • Event clean-up (putting away chairs and tables, taking out trash and cleaning up food/drinks. In other words, the dirty work!)
  • Volunteer at a BAF information booth for a community event (past events include International Winter on the Waterway, Grand Opening of the Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center, Cooking Class and Capoeira Show at Fiesta Mart.)
  • You can also offer behind-the-scenes assistance: data entry, general filing, mailings, and maintenance of our cultural center.

Our biggest event of the year, and greatest opportunity to pitch in, is the Houston Brazilian Festival, which takes place every year during the first weekend of September. If you are interested in supporting this event, you will need to commit to multiple days of training and preparation.   • Stage (Assisting artists backstage, keeping area clear and secure)
  • Tickets
  • Food
  • Drinks
  • Foundation Booth (distributing schedules and postcards, educating about programs and volunteer opportunities.)
  • Volunteer Supervisor (2 day, 6 hour shift commitment)
