COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
The Brazilian Arts Foundation believes in building strong community through
the shared values of education, joy, family, good health, and diversity. The organization regularly
hosts community events that emphasize culture, learning, and fun. In addition to an annual Batizado,
a four-day celebration of Capoeira, the organization presents bi-monthly "Samba Nights in the Heights,"
a family event showcasing batacuda or Brazilian drums, samba lessons, and performances.

All ages welcome, and no experience necessary. First class is FREE!
Capoeira: A truly unique art, combining martial arts, dance, and music. Classes emphasize
strength, coordination, agility, and self-defense. The energy of the game, the rhythm, and speed are determined
by the music, led by the Berimbau, an African string instrument. Students will learn essential moves and strategies,
as well as how to play the music and of course, practice all the skills together in the Roda!
Capoeira for Kids: A unique class that teaches children the basic movements and structure
of the game while building self-confidence, creativity, social skills, and strategic thinking.
Music / Maculelê / Capoeira: Learn and practice the three key instruments of the music of
Capoeira: the atabaque or drum, the berimbau, a one-stringed bow, and the pandeiro or tambourine. Also work on
other rhythms including samba, samba-reggae, and forro. This class also includes a Capoeira workout, as well as
Maculelê, a traditional Afro-Brazilian dance. Open to all levels.
Portuguese Class: An eight-week course that provides students with basic language patterns and practical
vocabulary. The emphasis is on developing conversational skills that will be helpful in travel and business.
Roda: The Portuguese word for circle and the formal setting in which Capoeira is played. All levels welcome!
Free for registered students.
Samba Class: Learn the dynamic national dance of Brazil to a selection of great music. This class provides
the foundation of several different styles of samba. Fun and a great workout!

PERFORMANCES
The Brazilian Arts Foundation performs at numerous events, festivals, and educational institutions throughout the year including Bayou City Arts Festival, Tapestry of World Dance, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Houston International Festival.
